What is photopheresis?

Photopheresis is an innovative procedure that aims to relieve symptoms caused by certain immune-mediated diseases. Photopheresis is already approved for the treatment of CTCL (cutaneous T-cell lymphoma) and is being studied for the treatment of various other conditions.

In each photopheresis procedure, a small portion of your white blood cells is collected, treated with medicine that is then activated by brief exposure to UVA (ultraviolet-A) light, and then promptly returned to your bloodstream. Photopheresis is done in repeated treatments that may gradually reduce symptoms over time. Each person’s treatment schedule and duration varies; your doctor will recommend the starting schedule best suited to your medical needs and condition.

Remember... Other names for photopheresis are ECP (extracorporeal photopheresis) and photoimmune therapy.
